Power Tool Safety

The use of power tools in industrial work is widespread due to its convenience and ease of use. Generally, power tools are divided into two: stationary tools and portable tools. Stationary tools are large equipment that requires a steady power supply. Hence, they need to be connected to an electrical socket to work. Most industrial companies use this type of equipment because they can be used for heavy-duty work for long periods of time. The portable tools are commonly used at home and in small-scale industries where work does not require so much power supply.

Though these power tools aid us in so many ways, they too can pose hazards. It is true that most power tools are designed to be safe and efficient but you may ask, “Why do accidents still happen despite their safe design?”. The answer to this is improper handling of instruments. Human error is the most common cause of most accidents involving power tools. For example, when using tools that are corded, it is possible that someone might trip over the cord. Additionally, damage to the cord might cause electrocution. Another thing that can happen is the explosion of the rechargeable battery used in portable power tools when they are not properly charged.

Here are some points to remember when using power tools to help keep you, your co-workers, and your workplace away from any danger.

Know how to operate a tool

This is the first thing to consider before you start working. Be sure that you have read the manual that comes with the product. Included in the manual are all the functions of the tool you will be using. You also have to make sure that your co-workers have understood how to operate the instrument. You must also know what to do in case a tool malfunctions.

Use the proper tool

There are times when we just use whatever tool that is within reach because we are too busy with our work. This is not the right thing to do; keep in mind that a tool is created for a specific function only. Using a tool that does not match its designated function may damage it and cause accidents. You can also damage the other materials that you are using, leading to a work that is poor in quality.

Have a suitable working area

The working area should be appropriate for your work; that is, it should be free from unnecessary things that can distract you. Children should not be present because they might trip over the cords of your tools. Also remember to wear the appropriate attire when working.
